The Story of 30 Under 30: Northern Ireland’s Climate Change Makers

By Jenna Potter- 30 Under 30 Manager, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful

The 30 Under 30 programme, Northern Ireland Climate Change Makers programme was developed by Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful in 2022 as a platform for young leaders to collaborate, develop new skills, and strengthen their capacity to create positive change. Across the region, young people were already raising their voices on climate issues and leading change in their own communities and across businesses. The programme was created to support and elevate this energy- offering a dedicated programme for emerging leaders to grow their skills, expand their networks, and turn their ideas into meaningful action.

Now entering its fourth year, the programme has grown into a powerful movement of 90 young leaders who are delivering real change across sectors and communities. Each year, thirty exceptional individuals are selected from diverse fields including education, business, local government, and environmental organisations. What unites them is their shared drive to create positive environmental and social impact within their spheres of influence.

The programme blends immersive workshops, networking, and peer learning to build practical skills in a range of topics including but not limited to sustainability, leadership, policy, communication, and wellbeing. Participants gain insights from globally renowned speakers and thought leaders, benefiting from world-class personal and professional development. Throughout the programme, each cohort member also designs and delivers an individual impact project, as well as participating in a group impact project, extending the benefits well beyond the 30 participants directly involved.

The outcomes speak for themselves. Programme impact data shows that 100% of alumni feel more confident after taking part, with many reporting newfound assurance in leadership, public speaking, teamwork, and their ability to work in the environmental sector. More than 75% have experienced a change or evolution in their role, from progressing into managerial positions to leading sustainability initiatives and mentoring others. A significant 91% have used their learning directly in the workplace, demonstrating how the programme’s influence is shaping organisational culture across Northern Ireland.

Importantly, 30 Under 30 also supports the emotional resilience of young leaders. By openly addressing challenges such as climate anxiety and burnout with peer to peer mentoring opportunities and a focus on wellbeing. Many describe the experience as transformative, with one alumni member saying: “It really felt like the next step I needed. It expanded my knowledge, my network, and my sense of responsibility.”

Through its award-winning programme design, thriving alumni network, and international connections, 30 Under 30 is cultivating a new generation of confident, capable leaders. Together, they are helping shape a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable future for Northern Ireland – and for the planet.
